CB Joejuan Williams: How Would Drafting this Player in Round 3 Make the Browns Better?

While the Browns need quality depth at the cornerback position, Vanderbilt’s Joejuan Williams would become an instant asset with the 80th pick in the third-round, the first of two selections in this round. He is a bigger corner and seems to be all legs which allows him to make up footage very quickly. He played almost every game in three seasons for the Commodores in the highly-competition setting also known as the SEC.

Williams has enormous physical traits who would excel as a press corner capable of zone coverages. His best attributes are his tackling skills and willingness to come up and help out on running plays. He will need to cultivate his cover skills at first but has the ability to one day become a rock-solid number two CB, but will need developmental time.

Specifics:

College: Vanderbilt
Height: 6’-3”
Weight: 208 pounds
40-time: 4.64
Career Tackles: 119
Career Interceptions: 4
Career Sacks: 0
Career Tackles for Loss: 6
Career Passes Defended: 25

Positives:

  • Long-legged with big body corner valuation
  • Length and size a plus
  • Will win from press coverages
  • Rare strength for such a big corner
  • Active in run support
  • Shows great recognition
  • Assignment sound
  • Second Team All-SEC 2018

Negatives:

  • Needs to find the ball more
  • Average change of direction
  • Slow transitions
  • Will not win from man coverages
  • Fluidity an issue

The Browns would love to add JoeJuan, ideally in the 3rd or 4th, potentially alongside a more experienced CB in free-agency to let him get a year under his belt before thrusting him into heavy action. The more teams scout this guy, the more they are falling in love with him. Gotta love the idea of a big body corner.

The Browns need quality depth at cornerback. Would you take JoeJuan Williams in the second-round?
